Integrated Network Strategy: Merging Services Firms

Abstract
When two leading corporations merged (a risk and insurance services firm and a benefits consulting firm) they wanted to accommodate advisory and transactional services under one umbrella. As separate entities, the companies operated independent computer networks under several operating names. The merger created a need for a single holistic infrastructure strategy.

Problem—ThruPoint was engaged to develop network policies and procedures from a global architecture standpoint.

The Business Challenge
While the consolidation began, the two entities began to merge organizations and develop a single global IT organization responsible for the new networks. With over 400 locations worldwide (230 sites and 10,000 users in EMEA alone) the IT managers needed to improve support and vendor management in all regions and ensure network readiness for future applications.

How We Helped
ThruPoint proposed a strategy to migrate to a merged WAN-infrastructure–and-governance model to reduce operating costs and to optimize shared services. We created RFPs to assess technologies and operations for a managed solution of the merged infrastructure.

Results
ThruPoint’s solution allowed the client to decide on a global WAN provider to create its new MPLS backbone.  The MPLS backbone allowed for the consolidation of offices throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States.  The project provided the client with significant cost savings and also is the foundation for delivering better services to the business.
